I remember the Savage sometime in the 1986-88 years. I walked into a dealer and saw the bike and couldn't believe it was only like $2200 new. It looked so cool to me. It was the drag bar style (I'm now surprised to see that that flat bars are not nearly as common as the pullbacks). Now, I was just a teenager with dreams of getting a bike.
Fast forward 15 years. I really didn't have the money to buy any bike, but I was determined to get one. I remembered the looks of the Savage were cool. I kind of felt this model was like a "best kept secret" because for the money, people buy older bikes that are ugly in my opinion. The Savage has a Timeless cool look to it.
I came across my bike in the paper. Guy wanted $2300 for a 1995 with 1600 mi. So I said to the guy on the phone, "Must be cherry, right? with those kinda miles?" He said, "well, the tank is dented, it was dropped in a driveway when brand new." When I went to look at the bike, the guy said that no one would come to look at it once they heard the bike was dropped and that I was the first to come look at it in months!
Well, I had to have it. With this bike at a $2000 price, there's no excuse for anyone *not* to own a bike! Asked the guy bottom line price: $2000. The deal went down at $1900, -100 for the dented tank.
I did a little customizing to it, but not much. What's really cool is that a guy with $30,000 in custom bikes came over to look at my bike last week like it was something special.
Therefore, the Savage grin-to-$ ratio is very high--unmatched in my opinion. If money was no object in my life, I'd be on a Harley or better yet a custom BMC or something. But like John Lennon sang, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans"!
I really like my Savage. I look at it every time I walk into my garage and try to ride it everyday.
